This paper reports a field study aimed at comparing the level of knowledge regarding syphilis among undergraduate students in the health sciences (HS) and those from non-health-related fields (NHS), as well as reflecting on the actual potential of Health Education as a strategy for the prevention and reduction of cases. The current public health scenario in Brazil reveals a high incidence of acquired syphilis, with the Southern region ranking as the second most affected nationwide. The study sample comprised 283 undergraduate students. Data were collected during the first semester of 2022 through a structured, paper-based questionnaire, and the data analysis followed a content analysis approach. The findings demonstrated a statistically significant difference between students enrolled in health sciences and those in non-health fields regarding knowledge of the topic. Low adherence to condom use and routine diagnostic testing was observed in both groups, highlighting the need to intensify preventive interventions. Therefore, the provision of systematic guidance throughout undergraduate education contributes to increased awareness and the promotion of self-care practices.
