The general objective of the study was to analyze how the work processes of social work professionals in the prison system of the state of Rio Grande do Sul are constituted, in order to understand the purpose of professional  intervention in this socio-occupational space. This qualitative exploratory study, based on the critical dialectical method, used content analysis, a  guiding script for bibliographic collection, and an online questionnaire for empirical collection. The questionnaire was administered to 12 social workers in the prison system of the state of Rio  Grande do Sul. The study reveals that social workers face challenges in their daily work with inmates such as overcrowding, precarious conditions, difficulties in interdisciplinary coordination, state neglect, punitive logic, institutional conservatism, and limitations in implementing their ethical-political project.
