O estudo dos ex-votos como objeto de pesquisa na área de comunicação está na origem da teoria fundada por Luiz Beltrão, a Folkcomunicação. Porém, os pesquisadores encontram, ainda hoje, dificuldades na classificação tipológica dos ex-votos. Beltrão não faz uma classificação exclusiva dos ex-votos, mas os enquadram na tipologia geral dos estudos folkcomunicacionais. A tipologia adotada hoje é a elaborada pelo pesquisador mexicano Jorge González (1981), que está restrita as manifestações culturais do catolicismo popular. O professor José Marques de Melo ao escrever sobre o tema, diz que a questão não está definida, deixando em aberto uma possível reclassificação. O objetivo deste artigo é a tentativa de ampliar o entendimento, agrupar e atualizar os tipos de ex-votos abrindo horizontes inclusive para outras manifestações religiosas que não se enquadram no catolicismo popular, mas que podem ser entendidas dentro deste processo comunicacional, hoje à margem da academia.
