O artigo analisa o conteúdo de folhetos da literatura de cordel que abordam a vida, a obra e a morte do cantor e compositor brasileiro Antônio Carlos Belchior, que se fez conhecer por meio do título de sua canção de grande sucesso Apenas um rapaz latino-americano. A análise é feita por meio de oito critérios: infância, juventude e começo da carreira; latinidade e músicas; e sumiço, absolvição e legado. Acolhe a hipótese de que os referidos folhetos apresentam o artista com características semelhantes as dos personagens das narrativas tradicionais da literatura de cordel, em detrimento da imagem socialmente construída do rapaz latino-americano. Preliminarmente, discute aspectos relacionados à obra, à imagem e à latinidade pretendida de Belchior.
