Abstract

This study discusses the representations of teachers on the pages of the newspaper Diário dos Campos, from Ponta Grossa, state of Paraná, Brazil, from 1932 to 1950. The cultural approach to the concept of representation and the discursive analysis of the media were used as theoretical-methodological assumptions. The documentary research allowed perceiving significant issues regarding the instituted speeches and the representations of teachers related to their working conditions and remuneration, central categories of the analysis. The materials selected for study demonstrated the issue of devaluation of teachers very forcefully in the analyzed period. Speeches that the teaching profession should be molded by a priesthood ideal, as a mission, without career-related guidelines were propagated.
