Abstract

The aim of this article was to specifically identify the strategies in use in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Portugal regarding academic and scientific integrity. Over the past decade, there has been an increasing prominence of discussions on fraud, both in society at large and, in particular, within HEIs. It is also broadly recognized as an evolving issue, still insufficiently understood and therefore deserving of attention and further investigation. There is a pressing need to study academic and scientific fraud, as well as other forms of misconduct, in greater depth. The main concern is ethical in nature, relating to integrity—a value worth preserving. This article presents existing strategies and procedures at the national level, including the normative dimension—Codes of Ethics, content on integrity, and descriptions of illicit practices—and the sanctioning dimension, referring to disciplinary regulations. The interrelationship between various types of documents is also highlighted, particularly those that define and embody different dimensions of institutional activity, such as Statutes (institutional principles and values), Codes of Ethics, Charters of Rights, Declarations on Academic Integrity, and Disciplinary Regulations. Ethics Committees are also recognized as an important support structure that reinforces the ethical quality of research.
