Digital transformation in sustainable construction: A systematic review on the role of IoT and Machine Learning in project management

This study investigates innovative models for managing sustainable construction projects based on the Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine Learning (ML), with an emphasis on assessing their levels of innovation, applicability, and sustainability contributions. The research was conducted through a systematic literature review, according to PRISMA guidelines, encompassing 21 articles published between 2020 and 2025 in the Scopus, IEEE, and Web of Science databases. The results reveal a predominance of incremental innovations (90.48%), concentrated on process optimization in the planning, execution, and monitoring phases. A greater incidence of the economic and ecological dimensions is observed, especially in resource efficiency and waste reduction, while the social dimension remains underexplored. The findings indicate that, although there has been consistent progress, there is still potential for evolution towards more integrated, intelligent, and sustainability-oriented solutions.
