Abstract

This article presents an investigation of government policies aimed at addressing school dropout and consolidating financial education. In order to examine how the Pé-de-Meia Program [Nest Egg Program], the Rumo Certo Strategy [Right Track Strategy), and the Na Ponta do Lápis Program [Financial Tracking Program] are articulated in the production of individualistic subjectivities, the study problematizes the connections among the government policies expressed in these documents. To this end, the analyses are grounded in Foucauldian theorizing on discourse. The investigation shows that these policies are designed to: (i) produce numerical information, thereby expanding forms of control over educational practices; and (ii) produce students’ financialization of the self, insofar as they subjectivize students to manage their lives according to the premises of the financial world. The policies analyzed seek to hold individuals responsible, inserting them into a process of withdrawal of rights aligned with the expansion of neoliberal rationality in education.
