Abstract

This article examines how the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) has been taken up in Brazilian academic research, using a corpus of Master’s dissertations and Doctoral theses defended between 2005 and 2022. The study adopts a documentary research approach, drawing on the Catalogue of Theses and Dissertations maintained by Brazil’s Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES). The studies were selected according to predefined criteria and examined through thematic analysis, supplemented by descriptive statistics to characterize the research output. Thirty-one dissertations and theses were identified, primarily from graduate programs in Education. The analysis revealed three thematic trends: educational governance and regulation; educational quality, assessment, and educational discourses; and empirical investigations using PISA data. The findings show that Brazilian academic research extended beyond using the assessment as a data source for analyzing student performance, also addressing public policy, educational quality, curriculum, literacy, and governance processes. Furthermore, research using the program’s microdata increased over the period studied, indicating increasingly diverse ways of engaging with PISA.
