Em diálogo com a tradição intelectual que remonta a Euclides da Cunha e João Guimarães Rosa, o romance Sargento Getúlio (1971), de João Ubaldo Ribeiro, retratou o sertão sergipano como lugar de travessia. O percurso entre Paulo Afonso, na Bahia, e Barra dos Coqueiros, em Sergipe, trouxe, ao protagonista, experiências relacionadas às transformações sociais e políticas ocasionadas pelos conflitos entre a tradição e a modernização. Transformado em espécie de anti-herói, pautado pela virtude (areté), o Sargento Getúlio atravessou as brenhas do sertão tensionado entre o apelo pelo enraizamento e a tentação da errância, revelando os sentimentos e emoções de pessoas ordinárias embrutecidas pelo sistema político dominante.
