En el siglo XX, el geólogo Kenneth E. Caster recolectó fósiles de invertebrados paleozoicos y mesozoicos de América del Sur, contribuyendo a importantes investigaciones para la geología brasileña. La colección paleontológica recopilada fue posteriormente llevada a estudiar en la Universidade de Cincinnati (EEUU), donde permaneció durante más de seis décadas. En 2016, en un acuerdo inédito entre Universidade de Cincinnati y Museu Nacional/UFRJ, se repatrió la Colección Caster, incorporándola a la colección de paleoinvertebrados del Museu Nacional. El informe aclarando la trayectoria de la repatriación de la colección y su trágica, pero parcial, destrucción en el incendio de la institución en 2018 y su actual destino en la colección, es el objetivo de este artículo.
