O artigo explora o processo de urbanização de Santa Maria, no estado do Rio Grande do Sul. A análise foi conduzida segundo variáveis e critérios relativos à paisagem natural, à situação geopolítica, à implantação de equipamentos estatais e privados de grande porte e ao processo de implantação de loteamentos. Para tanto, os registros históricos e cadastro municipal são analisados por meio de observação visual de mapas, imagens aéreas e fotografias, com o emprego de geotecnologias na elaboração de mapas analíticos. Por fim, analisa o grau de interferência dos elementos naturais da paisagem urbana na retração ou potencialização dos efeitos indutores de infraestruturas urbanas e equipamentos de grande porte.
