Em meados do século XX, o geólogo Kenneth E. Caster coletou fósseis de invertebrados paleozoicos e mesozoicos sul-americanos, contribuindo ainda com importantes pesquisas para a geologia brasileira. O acervo paleontológico reunido foi encaminhado para estudo na Universidade de Cincinnati (EUA), onde permaneceu por mais de seis décadas. Em 2016, em um acordo inédito entre a Universidade de Cincinnati e o Museu Nacional/UFRJ, deu-se o repatriamento da Coleção Caster, incorporando-a ao acervo de paleoinvertebrados do Museu Nacional. O relato esclarecendo a trajetória do repatriamento da coleção e sua trágica, mas parcial, destruição no incêndio da instituição em 2018, bem como o atual destino no acervo, é o objetivo do presente artigo.
