Este artigo visa fornecer um referencial teórico para os trabalhos de paleoecologia de fauna marinha bentônica para a melhor compreensão de termos em estudos recentes, ou não, do tema. Através de uma pesquisa bibliográfica elencando os trabalhos mais relevantes no tema, concluiu-se que os autores empregam os termos paleocomunidades e guildas para a classificação da fauna, mas na atualidade conceitos como grupos funcionais e nicho ecológico têm sido usados como seus sinônimos. Assim muitos trabalhos mais antigos podem enfim ser revisados de um ponto vista diverso, fornecendo um maior detalhamento e respondendo questões ainda em aberto. Além disso, foi observado que há pouca discussão a respeito do uso de conceitos da Paleoecologia para elucidar o modo de vida de assembleias fósseis, principalmente da Bacia do Paraná.
