This article analyzes the silence present in the short story "Whistler, British Columbia", which is part of Ototo (2020), a book written by the Brazilian author Henrique Komatsu. The analysis is conducted by understanding silence as a producer of meaning, engaging with the contributions of authors such as Orlandi (1992), Yamakawa (2017), Le Breton (2009), among others, who explore the multiplicity of meanings in the act of being silent. Other authors who study its construction and presence in language are also used to analyze the story, understanding silence more than the simple absence of words. Furthermore, we discuss how, in the aforementioned narrative, silence implies interpersonal transformations in the figure of the narrator, especially in his relationship with his father, whose presence is marked by silent manifestations.
