Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the trends in mortality from acute kidney injury (AKI) in Brazil between 2012 and 2022, based on data obtained from the Mortality Information System (SIM) of DATASUS. It is a descriptive and analytical ecological study that considered variables such as sex, age group, geographic region, and race/color. The results indicated a general trend of increasing mortality rates from AKI, particularly among older age groups, with a focus on the Southeast and Northeast regions. Mortality was higher among men and in more vulnerable populations, such as Indigenous and Black individuals, reflecting disparities in access to health services. The main causes of death associated with AKI included viral infections and pneumonia. It concludes that AKI represents a serious public health issue, highlighting the need for prevention policies, early diagnosis, and appropriate management, especially in higher-risk populations.
