Artigos

The CEIbero Journal welcomes articles that focus on cultural and educational institutions and practices in a supposedly Enlightened world. The journal aims to study the relationships between instruction and education for the training of administrative staff in the Iberian Empires, the relationships between economic activities, professional training, and educational projects, the relationships between the Enlightenment and written culture, and between the latter and cultural and educational practices as mediators of sociability. It seeks to encompass the Iberian Empires across a broader timeframe, from the 16th century to the early decades of the 19th century.

The journal focuses on fundamental themes that document and discuss the transition from political dominance to the empire of language, as well as to understand the presence and importance of the literate element, its demographics, geography, formation, forms, and mechanisms of sociability.

Glossário de termos do mundo Ibérico setecentista

The Glossary of Terms from the Eighteenth-Century Iberian World is an initiative of members of the Culture and Education in the Iberian Empires Research Group (CEIbero). The initiative seeks to build a better understanding of Iberian and Ibero-American societies in the context of the Ancien Régime through research that discusses how agents of the written word shared common meanings for certain terms, using them to define discourses and cultural practices. To this end, we adopt the perspective of understanding how various agents used the vocabulary of the period in their texts (printed or handwritten), taking into account the context, function, and contemporary reception of these same texts.

General guidelines for writing entries

(Initially, it is recommended to read the "Introductory Delimitations" contained in volume 01, number 01 of the magazine CULTURA E EDUCAÇÃO NOS IMPÉRIOS IBÉRICOS

1) Choice of term
The chosen word or expression must stand out in the 18th century documentation with which you work, appearing repeatedly and with particular and identifiable meaning(s), in order to preliminarily examine whether the use of the word or expression presents any new meaning (in relation to previous contexts), foreshadowing the current meaning of the term; or, observe whether the meaning then given to the word or expression has fallen into disuse today.

2) Analysis of the term
As a starting point, one can use dictionaries from the period, such as Bluteau's Vocabulary, whose volumes were published in the 1710s and 1720s, and Antonio de Morais Silva's Dictionary, first published in 1789, or dictionaries from the first decades of the 19th century; comparing them makes it possible to verify the occurrence of semantic permanence and/or changes in the term under analysis. However, it is essential to analyze the documentation produced during the period, to identify how the term is being used (and by whom), what meaning is being attributed to it, and at what time (beginning, middle or end of the century). In the process of analyzing the term and writing the entry, we take into account an observation by Javier Fernández Sebastián: the aim is not to conduct a philological study, but rather to produce “knowledge about past actions, events and ways of life” through the study of the use of language by certain subjects; Thus, our mantra for establishing the meanings of the terms analyzed is “Who speaks, in what context and with what intention” (Mario Molano Vega). Finally, the greater the documentary variety, the better.

* The author may, at any time, review and update the entry.
