The purpose of this paper is to inform about the results of a study that analyzed students' perceptions of academic dishonest practices in the university context and the proposals to prevent and address such dishonest practices. The research consisted of a descriptive-exploratory study based on a survey applied to 1319 students of a Costa Rican public university. The main results show that most of the strategies proposed by students to prevent and combat academic dishonesty refer to actions to be carried out by the university institution, and no proposals for actions in which the student body is the main educational actor are identified. This could be related to a possible belief that it is the university institution that is responsible for maintaining academic integrity, a phenomenon that exempts the student body from responsibility. The main conclusion of the study is the need for higher education institutions to implement policies that establish clear consequences for academic dishonesty practices and also work to strengthen the academic competencies of the student body and promote a culture of academic integrity.
