Literature on education and technology under Paulo Freire’s framework: a portrait and a critical cutoff

Abstract

The article presents an approximate portrait of works on education and technology in Brazil that claimed themselves as being developed under Paulo Freire’s framework. The composition performed through content analysis exposes characteristics of the sample of 29 articles. The investigation focused on one point of this portrait, when analyzing whether the works addressed the relations of power, exploitation and domination, common elements in critical approaches and examined through the contributions of Apple and Au (2015) and Selwyn (2016a, 2017), in dialogue with Freire (1987, 1998). Although they do not adhere to the predominant discourse in the literature in the area, most articles do not explore these important issues for a critical approach. In the limits of this research, it is highlighted the necessity of more works of education and technology under Paulo Freire’s framework that considers the political nature of technology.

  • Jaciara de Sá Carvalho, PPGE-UNESA

    Lecturer at the Postgraduate Programme in Education, University Estácio de Sá, and member of the ICT in Educational Processes Research Group. She holds both a Master’s degree and a Doctorate in Education from the University of São Paulo (USP), in addition to a specialist diploma in Communication/Educommunication Management, also from USP, a Bachelor’s degree in Communication (Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo) and a Technical Diploma in Teaching. In addition to her academic and educational work, she has acted as a journalist in mainstream media and coordinated several projects in the Third Sector, in particular, at the Paulo Freire Institute.

    Mestra em Educação pela UNESA, Pós-graduada em Gestão de Negócios pelo IBMEC e Pedagoga pela UERJ. Tem experiência com docência a distância e elaboração de conteúdo para a área de empreendedorismo e pedagogia (educação e trabalho), sobre a qual também ministra palestras.

    Mestre em educação pela UNESA e pedagogia. Profissional com passagens pelos segmentos do Ensino Superior e Educação Básica, atualmente trabalha como coordenadora pedagógica do Ensino Médio na rede Marista. Na educação Básica já atuou nas áreas de coordenação, credenciamento e autorização de Escola e cursos técnicos e profissionalizantes de nível médio. No ensino superior, desenvolveu atividades em projetos para a melhoria de processos tanto dos educandos quanto dos educadores.
