Abstract

The article presents the conceptualization of basic sanitation and its stages of water treatment and sewage collection, the relationship between sanitation and public health, containing elements for theoretical discussion on the increase in cases of hospitalizations for waterborne diseases (diarrhea, yellow fever, dengue, leptospirosis, malaria, and schistosomiasis) related to the lack of basic sanitation, and the coverage of basic sanitation through access to water treatment and sewage collection services in the city of Fortaleza.

Based on the indicators raised for the city of Fortaleza, a comparison of these indicators was made with Recife and Salvador, two large capitals in the northeast region.
