Abstract

When designing a building, it is essential that the engineer has in mind its size, type of soil where it will be built and active loads. The foundations are, therefore, essential components of the project, unloading the loads coming from the superstructure in the soil. Thus, it is common to carry out a preliminary design using theoretical or semi-empirical methods, based mainly on geotechnical tests. This paper proposes to dimension and compare aspects such as technical and financial viability of the types of foundations most used in civil construction, focused on a construction located on the campus of the Federal University of Maranhão, Vila Bacanga - São Luís, Maranhão. Thus, a bibliographic review of works related to the theme was carried out, as well as the choice of methods of calculating specific load capacity for each type of foundation already established in civil construction. In order to characterize the soil of the site, the analysis of the drilling reports and geotechnical parameters known in the literature was carried out. It appears that for this case study the dimensioning of superficial foundations proved to be more financially advantageous and deep foundations, even presenting a higher cost, have technical advantage.
