Analytical and numerical analysis of steel beam using prestressing as a structural reinforcement

Abstract

The use of prestressing in steel structures is little studied when compared to its use in concrete, which is reflected in the choice of this solution by structural engineers. This study aims to evaluate an application of prestressing a steel beam subjected to additional stresses, not fulfilled in its initial design, analyzing the analytical results with the model discretized by finite elements. Through the results obtained, it was possible to evaluate the possibility of using prestressing as a solution for the rehabilitation of the structure in different cases of loading. The computational model studied the distribution of internal efforts with values slightly different from those found analytically, with variations similar to those found in the literature. It was possible to assess that prestressing can be used as reinforcement in steel beams and its use guaranteed a better use of the structural element.
