Abstract

The correct dimensioning of an exhaust system allows significant power gains, which is related to the increase in the volumetric efficiency of the cylinders. This work aims to dimension an exhaust manifold for a four-stroke engine, to increase its volumetric efficiency. The proposed methodology presents calculations from the literature to find the diameters and lengths of ducts for car exhaust manifolds seeking the flow of exhaust gases more quickly. From the calculations, a new exhaust manifold was built for a GM Vectra motor racing car. In addition to the sizing of the proposed new model, measurements were made on the collector of the original system to facilitate qualitative analysis and comparisons. The measurements showed that the pressure waves act directly inside the ducts of an exhaust manifold, and the sizing methods aim to determine the length and diameter necessary for the pressure waves to travel through the ducts at the right time
