Abstract

Hybrid solar collectors are significant results of the quest to harness solar energy, generally aiming at cogeneration of electrical and thermal energy. An example is the Photovoltaic-thermal system (PVT), which when associated with a heat pump is called Photovoltaic-thermal system and Heat Pump (PVT-HP). Studies are needed to evaluate the efficiency of these systems in specific situations, such as, for example, for heating water for homes in different locations. This research aims to evaluate the energy performance of a photovoltaic and thermal system assisted by a double tank indirect heat pump, for domestic water heating, in Brazilian locations. Therefore, the computational simulation methodology was used to carry out the project, using the Transient System Simulation – TRNSYS software. A daily hot water consumption pattern was implemented with hot water withdrawals at selected times to simulate the daily hot water consumption of a Brazilian residence, for the cities of Belo Horizonte/MG, Brasília/DF, Florianópolis/SC and Recife/ FOOT. The system showed better thermal and electrical performance in the months when there are more hours of sunlight, lower levels of relative humidity and precipitation, and lower electrical consumption in the months when there is a higher average temperature. In Belo Horizonte/MG, Brasília/DF and Florianópolis/SC, the system showed higher thermal and electrical yields during periods with lower average temperatures, during autumn and winter, while in Recife/PE the system contributed more favorably during the warmest period, in summer and spring.
