Abstract

The study evaluated the efficiency of ground cover using ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) and a seed mix (rye and turnip rape) with different types of fertilization (organic and chemical) in a region conducive to the development of these species in southern Brazil. The research was carried out in the field, in plots with organic and chemical fertilizer applied to each type of cover, with the aim of comparing the performance of each treatment in terms of germination, stem height and root depth. It was observed that organic fertilization significantly favoured germination and root development, especially in ryegrass and seed mix, promoting a denser and more structurally sustainable cover. In contrast, chemical fertilization provided rapid vegetative growth, especially in the rye mix, but with less root depth. The results indicate that organic fertilization, combined with the use of a seed mix, may be more effective for soil cover practices aimed at conserving and improving soil conditions, while chemical fertilization is an alternative for accelerated growth. It can be concluded that the choice of fertilizer should be based on long-term objectives, with organic fertilization proving advantageous for sustainable agricultural practices.
