Abstract

Female representation in Brazilian politics is a topic of current relevance and this study investigates explanatory variables to understand the underrepresentation of women in candidates for councilor in the 2008, 2012 and 2016 elections in 5,108 municipalities in Brazil with up to 50,000 voters. The data originate from the data repository of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), treated by the Territorial Studies Group (GETE/UEPG) and Network Analysis Laboratory (LAR/UFPR). The results show that the data are consistent and contribute to the debate on the complexity of electoral determinants and on the challenges that gender relations impose for development and contemporary democracy.
