The academic literature indicates that gender equality and the occupation of decision-making spaces by women tend to broaden common welfare achievement in society. Aiming to explore this theme, this study investigates the relationship between women’s political participation in three elections and two indicators of sustainable development. The data was collected from the repository of candidate registers and their accounting to the Brazilian Superior Electoral Court (TSE - Tribunal Superior Eleitoral) regarding candidates running for the municipal council election in 2008, 2012 and 2016 in 5,546 municipalities of the country along with the FIRJAN index of Municipal Development (IFDM) and the City Sustainable Development Index (IDSC-BR). The software Jamovi and calculation spreadsheets were used for data treatment and statistical analysis. Unlike the current literature, the results showed (unexpected) correlations, close to zero, between the highest and lowest political-electoral participation of women and increase or reduction in sustainable development indicators.
