In the 1930s, with the discovery of protocuneiform tablets in Uruk, hypotheses about the origin of writing gained a documentary basis. Given the complexity of this issue, the debates focused on two fronts: one related to the meaning of the signs, investigated by Linguistics and another related to the factors of its emergence, investigated by History and Anthropology.
