Social Representations of the Black Population in the Cuiabana Press (1879-1912)

Based on the repercussions conveyed by the cuiabana press on the black population, this study aims to investigate how the newspapers in the Cuiabana Baixada at the time of abolition represented the daily life of black men and women, their struggles, their ways of life, specifically, through from the newspapers A province of Mato Grosso and O Matto-Grosso. How were blacks identified, what themes were they associated with in these newspapers that circulated in the Cuiabana Baixada? The objective of the research, therefore, is to analyze the social representations constructed and disseminated about black men and women in these Cuiaban newspapers between the years 1879 to 1912. For this, in methodological terms, content analysis will be adopted in the investigation of newspapers, from of the digitalized collections made available at the National Digital Library. This research can help to understand to what extent aspects of black culture were incorporated, or not, in the processes of representation in newspapers, which allows us to observe the symbolic borders within which black subjects were viewed by the press during and after the abolition process. legality of slavery.
