Sodomites at the Table: Food and Drinks, Sociability and Power Practices (Portugal, 1547-1698)

Abstract: The article, methodologically anchored in the Micro-Historical perspective, analyzes the diet of the Lusitanian sodomites who were prosecuted or condemned by the Portuguese Inquisition, between the years 1547 and 1698. When it comes to sources, both the processes and the complaints listed in the so-called Cadernos de Nefandos are used. It addresses, among other issues, the use of bread, proteins, fruits, sweets and drinks, as well as the study of parties and banquets based on the prevailing hierarchical relations at that time.

    He holds a degree in Social Sciences from the University of São Paulo (1968), a master's degree in Ethnology from the Universite de Paris IV (Paris-Sorbonne) (1971), a doctorate in Anthropology from the State University of Campinas (1975). He is currently a retired professor at the Federal University of Bahia. He has experience in the area of ​​Anthropology and History, with an emphasis on Anthropology of Afro-Brazilian Populations and History of Religions, working mainly on the following topics: inquisition, homosexuality, AIDS, homophobia and human rights.
