The transition from high school to university is a significant stage, marked by opportunities and challenges that affect young people's personal development. In this context, we analyze how foreign students shape their life plans through practices and norms that characterize the university world. A mixed-methods design was used. Through the application of the survey, 129 foreign students were identified; subsequently, using unstructured interviews and a non-probabilistic, intentional sampling, three categories that emerged inductively were explored in depth: the student wallet, the family border, and the university mansion. The results show that most students between the ages of 18 and 21 are financially dependent on their families and have less than $100 per month. Resilience and the search for independence are fundamental factors in the formation of professional identity.
