Abstract

This study aims to critically analyze the configuration of affirmative action policies at Brazilian federal universities by bringing together three complementary analytical dimensions: the legal framework underpinning these policies, the academic scholarship that interprets them, and the institutional arrangements responsible for their implementation. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, triangulating data from a systematic literature review. The findings indicate progress in the consolidation of the regulatory framework for affirmative action, while also revealing institutional and epistemological fragmentation that hinders effective implementation, particularly in addressing racial inequalities and other forms of social exclusion. The study concludes that coordinating the different dimensions of these policies remains a challenge to ensuring their reach and continuity.
