Abstract

This article presents an analysis of the history of initial teacher training at the Instituto de Educação Estadual Prof. Cesar Prieto Martinez, from 1924 to 1996 (Ponta Grossa – Paraná – Brazil). The research involved the analysis of documents about the creation of the Escola Normal [Normal School] of Ponta Grossa (opened in 1924) and the Institute of Education, analysis of approval, failure and dropout reports and interviews with teachers and former principals. It is indicated that the history of the Instituto de Educação Prof. Cesar Prieto Martinez confirms the relationship between the external forces of society and the pedagogical relationships within the institutions. In addition to the political clashes that reveal the correlation of forces within the state apparatus at certain historical moments, which are determining factors in whether or not educational proposals are achieved, the article highlights the changes in conception that established modifications in the conceptual apparatus in relation to what it means to be a teacher and its importance in society.
