RHOTICS SOUNDS IN BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE SPOKEN BY SLAVS DESCENDANTS IN THE INTERIOR OF PARANÁ
Abstract
In this research, we compiled results of variationist analyses that describe rhotic sounds, the r sounds, in speech data from communities in the interior of the state of Paraná, in the southern region of Brazil. Paraná received intense Slavic, Polish and Ukrainian immigration, and this ethnic group contributed to the culture and to the Brazilian Portuguese spoken in the region. Consistent with the realization of rhotics in Brazilian Portuguese, which has several variants with varied points and modes of articulation, the results of these studies show the presence of several rhotic variants. The predominance of the rhotic variant tap is linked to the intense occurrence of substitution of the strong rhotic, velar fricative, by tap in the speech of these Brazilians. The results suggest that the predominance of the rhotic variant tap and the variable phenomenon of substitution of the strong rhotic by tap characterize the speech of these Brazilians of Polish and Ukrainian descent.
