The construction of otherness in Jean de Léry’s Viagem à terra do Brasil. Research analyzes the 8th chapter of Viagem à terra do Brasil (1578), written by Jean de Léry, a French traveler and chronicler. We intend to reveal the ways the Brazilian Amerindian image is represented by the chronicler to verify the ideology implied in his discourse. The study has been developed according to Post-colonial Theory and its deconstruction of the imperialist discourse, built throughout the Modern Age.

Este artigo visa analisar o capítulo VIII de Viagem à terra do Brasil (1578) do viajante e cronista francês Jean de Léry, sob a perspectiva dos estudos pós-coloniais. Lembrando que tais estudos tem como uma de suas metas prioritárias desconstruir os discursos construídos e disseminados pelo imperialismo ao longo da história, pretendemos desnudar os substratos ideológicos que subjazem ao discurso de Léry, a partir do exame da imagem que se retratou do índio.
