In this article we discuss the theoretical, methodological and conceptual dimensions involved in teaching basic education, especially at high school level. To aid in this discussion, we present the simulated entrance examinations for the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre, Brazil) which are available on the internet as multiple-choice interactive tests which include explanations for each answer and newly formated detailed help texts. Emphasis is placed on the self-explanatory essay writing module designed to show the writing ability of the student. Such interactive tests are based on the principle that teaching in schools should reflect the necessities of everyday life.
