In 1995 Umberto Eco wrote that if Hitler had won, today we would probably be speaking German. However, some authors highlight that the expansion of the English language, up to its status as a lingua franca, was built on the ruins of the British Empire. This indeed facilitated the process that led to the rapid acceptance of English in all corners of the world. It added to the rise of the United States as the economic power after World War II. Sometimes seen as a threat, sometimes as an opportunity, the English language expands and advances over educational and cultural domains all over the world. In this article we present the influence of that language in countries related to the aftermath of that war as they appear in articles recently published by the journal English Today.
