THE HUMANIZATION OF THE HERO IN “OS LUSÍADAS”, BY LUÍS DE CAMÕES, AND “A SOLIDÃO DO GOLEIRO”, BY FLÁVIO MOREIRA DA COSTA
Abstract
This article aims to study the epic Os lusíadas, by Luís de Camões, focusing on the episode of “Velho do Restelo”, and the short story “A solidão do goleiro”, by Flávio Moreira da Costa, attempting to verify whether and how the protagonists of these works have their human aspects highlighted in comparison to their mythical traits. On the one hand, such characters are in fact humanized, or demythified, which is made through diverse literary strategies that call into question the heroic condition that they want to reach, thus linking them to antiheroes. On the other hand, when observed within the unity of each text as well as in relation to other meaningful elements identified in them, those characters actually constitute different types of heroes–the epic, in one case, and the tragic, in the other–, which either weakens or strengthens their closeness to the regular man.
