INFLUENCE, RE-WRITE AND APPROPRIATION OF THE LITERARY IMAGES OF PARADISE LOST OF JOHN MILTON IN THE ROMANTIC AND POETIC CONFIGURATION OF THE AESTHETICS IDEAS OF JOSÉ DE ALENCAR AND THE NOVEL NOITES NA TAVERN OF ÁLVARES AZEVEDO
Abstract
The dialogue between the poetry and the narrative of the works by José de Alencar: “Cartas resposta ao poema A Confederação dos Tamoios” and Noites na Taverna by Álvares de Azevedo with the John Milton’s poem: Paradise Lost, establishes a relation with the way the work of an English poet of the 16th century, was interpreted by the Brazilian writers of the 19th century. Using Hans Georg Gadamer’s hermeneutic interpretation, as well as the definitions of Wilhelm Dilthey and the literary-historic reflections of Afrânio Coutinho and Antonio Candido, this article develops a comparative analysis between José de Alencar’s and Álvares de Azevedo’s aesthetic and literary ideas, stating in precise notes by the authors the way John Milton’s work was read, translated and interpreted in the literary expressions of the selected artists. This comparative work gives us the opportunity to comprehend the creation of a national literature that combines with a high aesthetic value in the literary expressions created in Brazil during the XIX century.
