“MI COMPRA IOIÔ”: AN ANALYSIS OF THE SHORT STORY “CLÓ”, FROM LIMA BARRETO

Abstract

Published in the book “Stories and Dreams”, in 1920, the short story “Cló”, from Lima Barreto narrates the camaraderie between a rich representative and an old piano teacher, the latter who survives with some difficulty during the First Republic. The plot is developed in a suggestive and reticent manner, showing the ambiguity in the character construction. Its literary structure is also complex for presenting an open-end, which allows for various interpretations. This article aims to analyze the short story “Cló”, considering the transit between the main tensions found on the narrative. It intends to demonstrate, as a possible interpretation, that everything is structured as a negotiation, with the approval of the old teacher’s family, which aims to obtain some advantage from the rich politician, in times of difficult upward mobility.

Marcos Vinícius Teixeira possui Doutorado em Literatura Brasileira pela Universidade de São Paulo (2007-2012), Mestrado em Estudos Literários pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (2003-2005) e Graduação em Letras - Licenciatura em Língua Portuguesa e Bacharelado em Estudos Literários - pela Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto (1999-2002). É coordenador adjunto do Programa de Pós-Graduação - Mestrado acadêmico de Letras da Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul e professor do curso de Letras da mesma instituição com atuação na unidade universitária de Campo Grande-MS. É um dos líderes do Grupo de Pesquisa "Modernismo periférico: poéticas do século XX". Desenvolve pesquisa relacionada à Literatura Brasileira do século XX.
