The blending of a disfigured burst of laughter with a skeptical negativity clearly evinces what is the most meaningful thing for man: existence itself. A romanticized Death dialogues with a homerical catabasis, with a “menipéica” satire and with centurial manifestations, including Dostoievski’s tale “Bobók” (19th century) – there is the image of talking corpses, in which man recognizes himself as being something vicious and irrevocable, revealing the cosmopolitism of human misery. This “anti-identity” that links the emptiness to the silence of death itself, has a cynical function for those who know they are dying. The aim of this work is to analyze Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas through the convergence of illusion and reality at the same literary sepulchre. The comparison with the Russian writer’s text helps us understand how Machado de Assis broke up the limits of the typical novel of that period and introduced a playful and melancholic language, able to decompound the eternal human contradictions.
