THE EFFECT OF SOCIAL VARIABLES ON THE VARIABLE BEHAVIOR OF THE PREPOSITION “PARA” IN SEABRA-BA
Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the influence of social predictors on the use of the preposition “pra” (‘to’) in the variety of Portuguese spoken in Seabra (BA). We deduced the analysis data from a sample of recordings of 16 informants, belonging to the database of the Project Se abra à Chapada: coletando, explorando e mapeando dados sociolinguísticos (‘Open yourself to Chapada: collecting, exploring and mapping sociolinguistic data’, CEMEDADOS), whose stratification took place according to sex/gender (male and female), age (20-33, 35-48 and 50+years) and education (elementary, medium and university) of the interviewed speaker. After having tabulated the data, we submitted them to chi-square tests and a binary logistic modeling approach in R (R CORE TEAM, 2020). In order to reach the proposed objective, we calculated, selected and interpreted the logistic regression model, finally testing the main assumptions of the tests. We found with the results that age and education significantly influence the use of the “pra” variant in the analyzed speech community.
