Contrary to what it might seem at a first glance, Portuguese language test at university entrance examination does not allow a complete evaluation of the student’s reading of a certain topic. This kind of text includes a whole series of questions offering alternative anwers representing interpretations of the teacher who prepared them. The student’s task is restricted to identifying the alternative answer whose interpretation is coherent with the text. Taking this into account, it may be assumed that writing composition is the best test to evaluate reading, because it allows the teacher to evaluate the readings and interpretations of the text proposed as stimulus. Supported by the practice of evaluating writing at the entrance examination of Universidade Estadual de Maringá, this paper discusses the importance of the writing text and offers a method of evaluating reading in this situatiom which may be helpeful to teachers in their work with text production and evaluation.
