THE “BEM QUE S” CONSTRUCTION AS A CONSTRUCTION OF INTERSUBJECTIVITY: UNITY VERSUS DIVERSITY IN PRAGMATICS

Authors

Abstract

Constructions of intersubjectivity are used to establish cognitive coordination between subjects in an interaction (Verhagen, 2005), for example marking the speaker’s calculations about the interlocutor’s mental states and serving communicative functions. Within the theoretical framework of Use-Based Construction Grammar (Goldberg, 2006), we point out that the Bem Que S Construction, instantiated in utterances literally translated to “Well that I was told it was going to rain” and “Well that I could go to the beach”, is to be considered intersubjective. Here, we recognize, at first, a certain discursive unity in its uses; then our aim is to demonstrate, via a qualitative-interpretative analysis, that there is also a great conversational diversity in its instanciations. Finally, we offer a systematization of the communicative functions associated with this construction.
