LANGUAGE, IDENTITY AND PERFORMATIVITY

Authors

Abstract

In this article, we explore language, performativity and its intersection in identity formation, considering performativity as the speech acts (Butler, 2017; 2021; Austin, 1990). By understanding language as an action that constantly recreates meanings, including identities, we collaborate with language studies, queer theory, and gender and sexual dissidence to question the hegemonic linguistic science and the identity, and language norms. We understand that gender and sexual performances are expressed linguistically, and it is through linguistic action that we create meanings and produce – while we are also being produced – our bodies and language itself.
