INVESTIGATING LINGUISTIC PHENOMENA IN MANAUS SPEECH: A STUDY OF OCCURRENCES AND PATTERNS
Abstract
In this study we report on occurrences of linguistic variations in Manauara speech, at the phonetic-phonological level. To this end, we carried out field and bibliographical research based on the contributions of authors such as Bechara (2009), Bagno (1999; 2007; 2008), Calvet (2002), Labov (2000), Mollica (2003), among others. As a data collection technique, we applied a phonetic-phonological questionnaire - QSL according to (ALIB, 2001) to twelve (12) informants from the city of Manaus/AM, six (06) male and six (06) female, divided into groups aged between 18 and 30 and 45 and 80 years. In terms of schooling, six (06) were literate up to the 9th grade and six (06) were not literate. The data was analyzed and interpreted in the light of Variationist Sociolinguistics. The results point to occurrences of linguistic phenomena, i.e. one phoneme in place of another, change of phoneme position, elimination of phonemes and extra phonemes; assimilation; rhotacism; reduction of e, o, unstressed pretonic vowels, among others.
