MELODIC CONTOURS IN INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES PRODUCED IN LOUD READING: PERCEPTION ANALYSIS

Authors

Abstract

This paper analyzes the relationship between intonation contours and the perception of propositional attitudes neutral yes-no question, request for confirmation, incredulous yes-no question and rhetoric yes-no question, described by Moraes (2008). This thesis is based on Intonational Phonology — Gussenhoven (2004) — and in research by Moraes (2008, 2012, 2016, etc.) who studied the contrastive variation in the intonation of Brazilian Portuguese (PT-BR). The corpus is formed by 12 speech signals which refer to readings performed by the researcher herself and 480 objective responses from 3 perception experiments. The results indicate that the interviewees were more sensitive to neutral yes no question and incredulous yes-no question and that the melodic configuration of the confirmation and request for confirmation proposed by Moraes (2008) proved to be atypical in the dialect of the investigated subjects.
