“WITH IT LIKE THIS, TODAY I KNOW HOW TO EXPRESS MYSELF”: THE HAIR DISCOURSE, THE CONSTRUCTION OF SUBJECTIVITY AND THE HAIR TRANSITION DEVICE

Authors

Abstract

The aim of this article is to present an analysis of the discourses of hair transition, in its tactical polyvalence (Foucault, 2017), considering its tensions and positivities. The corpus is made up of excerpts from two interviews with women who have undergone the transition, in order to highlight the discursive regularities observed: this practice operates in the construction of the subjectivity and “desubjectivity” of the transitioned women, through statements of empowerment and which also serve a market interest (anchored in the imaginary of beauty and visibility). Even so, there are positives in these practices when you consider that this return to the “natural” also operates in the (re)signification of black aesthetics.
