REMARKS ON THE VERBAL PERIPHRASIS [PEGAR (TAKE) E (AND) V2]
Abstract
This study aims to discuss some properties of the construction [pegar e V2] as a paratactic periphrasis of aspectual nature found in data such as ‘Maria pegou e saiu’. The argumentation seeks to demonstrate that such construction is formed by means of a pseudocoordination, in which ‘pegar’ functions as an axiliary verb related to the expression of lexical aspect (Aktionsart). To this end, some characteristics that distinguish the construction under study from canonical coordination will be presented. The present analysis proposal intends to account for (i) the sudden onset interpretation; (ii) the globality interpretation; and (iii) the restriction in the selection of predicates (* Maria pegou e esteve feliz).
