THE INVOCATION TO THE “NEGRINHO DO PASTOREIO”: FERNANDES BARBOSA (1910-1988) IN DEFENSE OF BLACKS AND INDIANS

Authors

Abstract

This article presents a discussion about the invocation of the “Negrinho do Pastoreio” made through “Letters to the Negrinho do Pastoreio”, by Walter Spalding, under the pseudonym of “Blau Severo”, addressed to Fernandes Barbosa in the 1950s. These letters arose from the “Controversy surrounding Sepé Tiaraju”, at the Historiographical and Geographic Institute of Rio Grande do Sul – IHGRGS, when members of the Institute were divided between two models of History: the one that preserved the narration of History, maintaining the perspective of the colonizer; and one that narrated history from the perspective of the colonized, including popular narratives, such as legends.
